“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect. The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.” This was available to read on the official Manchester United website before noon. But are there any reasons to be thankful?
TROPHIES? YES! STYLE? NEXT QUESTION PLEASE…
Jose Mourinho managed at Old Trafford from May 2016. Over 2 years he won three trophies – Europa League, FA Community Shield and the EFL Cup. He also lead the team to 2nd place in Premier League. Of course, it was something, but everyone will agree that they are not the top-class trophies that United fans were waiting for. Also the style of the team left a lot to be desired.
In The Special One’s case even numbers don’t defend him. Beyond his most successful period at Chelsea (2004-08) he hasn’t been able to stay at one club longer than three seasons, but everywhere he went, his teams won serious competitions.
DOWNFALL OF STATS
Everything started with FC Porto and the first big success was winning the UEFA Cup in 2003 and again the next year, with the same team he won the Champions League! Then he came to Chelsea FC together with a few players and big transfers after the club had been taken over by Roman Abramovich. Then the golden period in Chelsea’s history began – double English Premier League Champions in consecutive seasons, FA Cup Winners, the Football League Cup twice and the Community Shield. Next club – FC Internazionale. Double Serie A Champions, and winners of the Champion League and the Italian Cup. After that, he had some stormy times at Real Madrid, but they won the Primera Division, Spanish Cup and Super Cup. Next club was Chelsea again, Over the two years, which are not rated as very lucky, he was still able to win the Premier League and the Football League Cup.
It was different at Manchester United. There he won less significant trophies, there were more weak appearances, more trash talk at press conferences and the results were getting worse and worse. Black clouds have been gathering for a long time. A scandalously weak attitude from the team in the match against Liverpool just about sealed his fate. This defeat at Liverpool and in addition, the style in which they lost, is something the club and fans could never accept. It’s not entirely known if it was Jose’s or the club decision, but anyway, He had to leave.
