NBA game played at arena with sportsbook for the first time
The Washington Wizards game against the Philadelphia 76ers at Capital One Are was the first game at an American venue where a legal sportsbook was allowed to accept bets.
William Hill Sportsbook at the arena opened May 26, officially becoming the first sportsbook at a US pro sports venue. NBA commissioner Adam Silver, who was an early proponent of regulating sports betting in the U.S., attended the game and toured the sportsbook at the arena.
“The place was busy and had an energy,” William Hill vice president of strategy and business Dan Shapiro said. “That was the great thing to see was the energy in the venue.” Read more

ITV urged to suspend gambling ads during Euro 2020
Ronnie Cowan, vice-chairman of the Commons’ all-party group on gambling-related harm, called on ITV to ban gambling advertising during the upcoming tournament.
Cowan, Scottish National Party member for Inverclyde, said that gambling should be “tolerated, not promoted”.
“The amount of gambling advertising around the live broadcast of football matches at the Euros will be significantly reduced compared to the 2018 World Cup,” a statement from ITV read. Read more
Match-fixing investigation in Sweden extended to cover money laundering
Investigation into match-fixing and unlicensed gaming led by Director General of the Swedish Chamber of Commerce Gunnar Larsson will be extended to cover allegations of money laundering and terrorist financing.
“The current investigation will propose solutions to enable effective supervision of illegal gambling and strengthen the work against match-fixing. These issues are of great importance for a sustainable gaming market” – said Ardalan Shekarabi, Minister for Social Security. Read more
Copa America moved to Brazil
CONMEBOL has confirmed that the 2021 edition of the Copa America will be held in Brazil after Colombia and Argentina resigned from organizing the tournament.
First, Colombia rescinded their duty on May 20 due to a wave of civil unrest, then Argentina resigned because of the COVID crisis in the country.
The 2021 Copa America will begin on June 13, and end on July 11. Read more
Away goals rule scrapped for by UEFA
European competitions chiefs will be allowed to scrap the away goals rule in the Champions League and Europa League from next season.
The rule, which has been in place since 1965, is a method of tiebreaking in situations when teams play each other twice. If there are two ties, the team that scores more goals ‘away from home’ wins.
The rule change decided by UEFA will affect the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League competitions. Read more
