Infantino says biennial World Cup could save Africans from death in the sea
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has addressed European politicians saying that his plan for a World Cup every two years could stop African migrants from finding “death in the sea”.
Speaking at a Council of Europe assembly, Infantino claimed that countries outside Europe needed greater access to national football competitions to prevent drastic consequences. “We need to give opportunities, to give dignity. The idea of a World Cup every two years has been widely rejected by European and South American federations as well as the big clubs. But it enjoys unanimous support among the 54 African federations.
FIFA’s president remarks provoked immediate criticism. Ronan Evain, executive director of Football Supporters Europe, tweeted: “How low can Infantino go? Instrumentalising death in the Mediterranean to sell his megalomaniac plan is beyond words.” Read more

The league had initially agreed to let players travel to China for the Olympic Games, but then withdrew this permission due to the pandemic’s disruption of its season and a growing number of postponed games.
Canada’s team will be led by former NHL players, including Eric Staal (age 37), David Desharnais (age 35), Daniel Winnik (36), and Adam Cracknell (36), supported by young talents such as Owen Power (19). Read more
